When planning a wedding, every detail matters, and one of the most cherished aspects of your big day is the bouquet you carry. The bouquet is arguably the most photographed accessory of your big day! Wedding bouquets are more than just a cluster of flowers; they symbolize love, tradition, and style. With so many types of wedding bouquets available, it can be overwhelming to choose the perfect one. Our bouquet guide explores the most popular types of wedding bouquets, styles, and shapes to help you find the ideal vibe for your wedding day!
What Are the Different Types of Wedding Bouquets that we Design?
Wedding bouquets come in various styles and shapes, each with its own charm. Let’s explore some of our most popular types of wedding bouquets we love designing for our brides and couples:
Natural Wedding Bouquet
Our most popular signature bouquet style! The naturally styled organic bouquet is a timeless and popular choice. Natural bouquets can include a wide assortment of flowers, styled in a gently loose oval shape and often bound together with our favorite luxury silk ribbon by Honey Silks & Co. A hand-tied bouquet is romantic, versatile, and a natural option. This bouquet style is perfect for both modern weddings, garden party weddings, and traditional ceremonies too. Naturally styled bouquets offer an effortless and artful appearance while having the design opportunity to incorporate more colors and seasonal varieties!
Micro Posy Wedding Bouquet
Micro posy bouquets are a popular choice for bridesmaids or flower girls. Micro bouquets typically feature about 10 stems of featured blooms finished in silk ribbon and are perfect for whimsical or garden party wedding themes. This bouquet can also be made up of one type of flower or one color of flowers to align with the bridesmaid dress theme. The micro posy bouquet are considered petite in size and lightweight but cohesive to the overall floral design from the big day. They are also an excellent choice for couple’s looking to make a floral impact in other areas of the wedding while keeping costs down with personal wedding flowers.
Pageant Wedding Bouquet
Also known as a presentation bouquet, the pageant bouquet is a unique style where long-stemmed flowers are held in one hand, resting along the bride’s arm. Often featuring calla lilies or other elegant blooms, this bouquet type adds a sophisticated touch typically at formal wedding ceremonies.
Purse Wedding Bouquet
The purse or basket-purse bouquet is a modern twist on bridal florals, featuring a rattan or natural basket-purse adorned with flowers. This type of bouquet is perfect for brides looking for something unique and artistic, especially for garden weddings.
How to Choose the Right Bouquet Style for Your Wedding?
Selecting the right bouquet style is about more than just aesthetics. Here’s what you should consider:
1. Wedding Theme: Your bouquet should complement your wedding theme. For example, a natural and whimsical style bouquet suits a garden party wedding, while a pageant bouquet is perfect for a 90’s style wedding or a formal celebration.
2. Dress Style: The shape and size of your bouquet should enhance your wedding dress without overpowering it.
3. Personal Style: Choose a bouquet that reflects your personality. Whether you prefer a minimalist micro posy or an lush garden-style bouquet, let your style shine through!
How Does Your Wedding Theme Influence Bouquet Style?
Your wedding theme plays a significant role in determining the right type of a wedding bouquet. For a garden wedding, a natural hand-tied bouquet with an assortment of seasonal flowers and greenery works beautifully.
What Are the Common Shapes and Sizes of Wedding Bouquets?
1. Naturally Round: Loose and organic, often seen in garden-style bouquets. Suitable for all wedding styles.
2. Cascading: Long and flowing, ideal for dramatic entrances.
3. Compact: Small and tidy, like the micro posy bouquet.
4. Round: Traditional and timeless, this bouquet is tightly styled in a round shape.
How to Incorporate Seasonal Greenery in Your Wedding Bouquet and other Wedding Flowers?
As a wedding florist who specializes in custom and unique floral design, this is a question I get all the time! Greenery selection is so important for all floral designs, not just your bouquet. Seasonal greenery varieties usually provide the more unique shapes, long stems, and beautiful color variation that makes bouquets and floral installations truly distinctive and unique.
In the Spring time, blooming cherry blossoms can make a huge impact in an installation, Spirea can add so much shape and movement, and in the Fall, you can find Viburnum or Prunus Cerasifera (Plum) with beautiful fall colors. When foliage supports the color palette of a design, rather than being just stark green, it makes the design so much more striking and interesting. Using a golden yellow foliage in a yellow arrangement adds to the drama and intensity of the design, whereas using green foliage can dull or take away from the overall appearance. We see clients seeking more color intensity and less “greenery” in their designs. It is tricky and drives up the floral costs when creating arrangements without using foliage. But if you can find colored seasonal foliage, you can still provide coverage and a foundation for your flowers without taking away from the design. In fact, the design could be even more unique and strikingly beautiful if the foliages are selected and used thoughtfully with intention.
What Types of Greenery Work Well in Wedding Bouquets?
Common greenery options include eucalyptus, ferns, and ivy seen in bouquets for many generations. These elements pair beautifully with flowers but greenery should be used to enhancing the bouquet’s visual appeal. As mentioned above, we often design with seasonal greenery instead of everyday greenery keeping the bouquet truly one-of-a-kind and special to the wedding’s season. To achieve balance, we use minimal greenery to frame and complement your flowers. Our Spring natural bouquets, for instance, can include whimsical trailing Jasmine vine for an organic look.
What Role Does a Florist Play in Creating Your Wedding Bouquet?
A skilled wedding florist helps you choose the right type of seasonal flowers and style to suit your wedding day vision. They’ll also ensure that your bouquet aligns with your wedding theme and your gorgeous designer gown!
How to Choose the Right Wedding Florist?
Look for a wedding florist with experience in creating wedding bouquets, flower arches, and table arrangements. Check their portfolio from previous wedding designs, and read their client reviews. Also, don’t hesitate to ask questions about their process during the initial floral design consultation. We always connect with our couples on a live video call for getting to know each other and their wedding flower dreams. Most of our couples are referred from their hired wedding planner, and we work together as a team to create the most cohesive and custom wedding designs.
What Questions to Ask Your Florist About Bouquets?
1. Which flowers are in season for my wedding?
We plan and source flowers typically available to the month of your wedding. Often times, premium seasonal flowers are only available for a few short weeks before they are gone for the year. This is why it’s important to hire an established florist with years of seasonal sourcing experience, including local flower farmer and wholesaler relationships.
Tip: Ask your florist how many years of experience they have with wedding design, read client testimonials, or check out their professional portfolio.
2. Can you create a bouquet using one type of flower?
Of course! We love using one type of flower for a mono-bloom (single flower type) bouquets. This creates a simplistic vibe! Check out the photo below from one of our Summer 2024 bride’s Tulip bouquet.
3. What are your recommendations for bouquet shapes and sizes?
We recommend keeping the bouquet size comfortable and styled as an accessory, while still highlighting the designer wedding gown. We do not specialize in designing cascading or over-sized wedding bouquets. Often times we’ll request the bride’s height during the initial design call for best bouquet sizing but most bride’s love our naturally styled bouquet.
4. What are your recommendations for holding the bouquet?
It’s time to meet your best friend and soul mate at the altar! Once the bride is ready to walk down the aisle, we suggest holding the bouquet at your belly button with a natural grip and tilting the bouquet slightly forward with elbows relaxed.
5. How can you preserve your beautiful bouquet?
We suggest keeping your bouquet, forever! There are many ways to preserve your wedding bouquet to cherish for years to come. Many of our bride’s have their bouquets professionally pressed into a wall framed design or preserved into beautiful resins for your book shelf, desk, or anywhere in your home to display your preserved bouquet art.
